Signing away our soul – What Europhiles don’t want us to know?

The EU Referendum looms ever closer, with increasingly horrific prognoses and predictions, ranging from recession (mild) to world war (catastrophic). Now Boris Johnson has further stirred the water by comparing the EU’s aims to those of Hitler, claiming a similar plan to unify Europe under a single authority. Remainians say the comparison is offensive and desperate, but is Boris right?

It would appear that the answer to that, given a recent report which notably has not been brought to the attention of the general pubic, may be yes.

On 22 June 2015, the European Union issued a press release on behalf of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the Euro Summit, Donald Tusk, the President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz (http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-15-5240_en.htm). It announced an ambitious plan on the part of the 5 Presidents to deepen economic monetary union within the EU, resulting by 2025 in a total sharing of sovereignty by member states. To put it another way, it lays out a ground plan for political union, whereby the need for collective decision-making will necessarily involve the surrender of national autonomy.

Remain campaigners are positive in their assertion that the EU poses no threat to our sovereignty. We have the right to leave the EU at any time, they argue, therefore we retain absolute control. In a global world, they add, the reality is that all countries have to work closely with each other and compromise in order to flourish economically; but that shouldn’t worry us, because David Cameron is currently negotiating an opt-out clause for anything we don’t like.

But let us consider – currently 50% of UK legislation having economic impact, and 17% of all other legislation, is shaped in Brussels, and by virtue of The European Communites Act 1972, EU law is recognized as having primacy; a position rigorously maintained by the European Court of Justice, which similarly takes precedence over our own legal system.

But now, under the radical plan of the 5 Presidents, Europe (including in the future places like Turkey) will become a political union that overrides and suppresses any and all potentially deviant national interest under the cloak of monetary integration. The report talks of a lasting, fair and democratically legitimate basis for the future, with integrated employment and financial laws and regulations, which will contribute to more growth, jobs and prosperity for all citizens.

The 5 Presidents make much of strengthening democratic accountability and legitimacy by increased power sharing and interdependence, maintaining that a fragmented voice means the EU is punching below its political and economic weight.    But in this juggernaut of a ‘Superstate’, whose values will prevail overall?   And if the interests of individual member states are subsumed and neutralized under the mantle of convergence, where does democracy come in? Exactly how will the vote of the UK electorate count any more?

The truth is that if we remain in the EU and this radical new plan is implemented – as seems highly likely – the UK will be reduced to ‘county’ status within the glorious and all-powerful United State of Europe. There are undoubtedly risks attached to every decision, and at the moment many of these are unquantifiable. As Sir Gerald Howarth has memorably commented of the IMF’s prediction of economic and financial collapse if we leave, such forecasts are “worse than a clairvoyant at a summer fete”. But if we vote to stay in, political union under a single authority looks increasingly certain.   So do we really want to hand over our future to unelected and Godlesss Eurocrats, who quite patently do not have our best interests at heart?

We are at present, nominally at least, a Christian nation. We face uncertain times and the future – not just for Europe, but for the world as a whole – is undeniably perilous. Surely then we should be defending our Christian heritage and values against the possible imposition of policies – both secular humanist and Islamic – over which the nation will have no control. Economic union is one thing, but current proposals go far beyond that… and smack of a vote by turkeys for Christmas.
