Antisemitism, like Japanese knotweed, is alive and well and flourishing in the UK

For centuries, to be ‘British’ has been seen as a hallmark for tolerance, respect for all, good manners, fairness, stoicism, and unwavering courage in face of adversity.  In many ways, our national character has been a reflection of our Christian faith, which first came to our shores around two thousand years ago – shortly after Christ’s death, in fact, brought here by Roman traders.  That faith took a while to establish, of course, and when the Romans left, in 410 AD, it opened the way to Anglo-Saxon – pagan – invasion, which resulted in 400 years of conflict and instability as the warring tribes battled for supremacy.  But, during that period, Christianity spread, and the Saxons too were converted, so that by the time of the Norman conquest Britain was, to all intents and purposes, a Christian country.

Our unity undeniably grew out of invasion and conflict but, broadly speaking, we have been a ‘quiet’ and Godly people, who historically did not seek conflict.  When threatened, however, we acted with resolution and valour to defend our own, and to shield those who could not defend themselves.  Not for nothing has the phrase ‘heart of oak’ come to be identified with the British spirit.

Yet in the last seventy or so years, while it seems we were sleeping, an enemy, hell-bent on our destruction, appears to have crept in by the back door.  An enemy that from the start despised our Christian faith, and sought to replace it with the counterfeit worship of ‘Self’, starting out by normalising sexual licence, promiscuity, and abortion – all in a relentless drive to undermine and destroy the fabric of our society.  Inevitably, before this onslaught, family life began to disintegrate, but men and women were told it didn’t matter.  They were in control and could have whatever they wanted – they could even ‘re-create’ creation.  But the reality was rather different, because the truth was that our nation was under attack spiritually, with the devil – the ancient enemy of man – fighting to seize control.

To our shame, we bought in to the lie. Even the Church, charged with upholding truth and protecting the flock, has embraced cultural relativism and reneged on the faith, thereby allowing yet more ideas and religions hostile to Christ to take root.  In our slavering pursuit of diversity and multi-culturalism, we have become complicit in the attempted destruction of those who stand up for righteousness and truth.

Last week the news carried reports of pro-Palestinian protests against the banning of Palestine Action as a terrorist organization.  Demonstrations were marked by anti-Semitic chants, accompanied with cries of “f— your Jewish state”, which led
Lord Walney, the former government extremism adviser, to say, “These appalling chants underline the vile anti-Semitism infecting the Gaza marches. For too many, the underlying driver is ugly hatred of the world’s only Jewish state, not justice for the Palestinian people.” Such intolerance is evidence, if evidence were needed, of the poisonous weed attempting to take over our country.

Set against this Bilton School in Rugby, which, it will be remembered, only days before the ugly demonstrations against Israel sent a pupil home in disgrace, after she arrived at school in a dress emblazoned with the Union flag.  The school had apparently scheduled a day to celebrate different cultures, as part of its drive to encourage inclusivity and, as homework, the pupils had been told to prepare a speech celebrating their heritage.  Courtney Wright, English born and bred, did precisely that, wearing a rather attractive Spice-girl themed sequinned dress.  One can only imagine how excited the twelve-year old must have been as she prepared, but, arriving at school, she was told by disapproving teachers that her contribution was inappropriate (and impliedly offensive) because “she gets to celebrate being British every day“.  She was then put in isolation, until collected by her father and taken home.

All this, despite the fact that, only days before, the school had sent a letter to parents saying, ‘As part of the celebration, we would like to invite students to wear traditional cultural dress to school instead of their usual school uniform. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to proudly represent their heritage and learn about the cultures of their peers and staff.‘

Under pressure from an enraged public, the school has since apologised, but what are we to make of such blatant bias against support for British culture and values?  And how does this tie with the chilling rise in anti-Semitism, combined with the increasingly overt discrimination against Christians similarly evident across society?  And yes, you read the latter part of that sentence correctly, because, as evidenced by VfJUK’s Commission of Inquiry into Discrimination Against Christians (CIDAC), there is increasingly clear evidence of an active attempt in the public sphere to suppress Christian belief.

The truth is, our current multi-faith, diverse society is neither tolerant nor inclusive.  Rather, it is sick – in terminal decline, in fact, and, if Britain is to have any chance of survival, it is imperative that the rot afflicting our country is removed. There are unquestionably difficult and challenging times ahead.  To have any hope of enduring, we must recover the values on which our nation was founded.  Christian values of truth, respect and genuine love for all.  We must rediscover our strength.

Yes, in our ethnically mobile, increasingly violent and shifting world, we must care for the persecuted and lost – but the one thing we must not do is give up and compromise our values and faith.  And we must not allow ourselves to be exploited and abused by those who seek to engineer our downfall.  Despite all attempts of the past century to plunder and ravage our culture, we remain a Christian nation.  To have any chance of survival, we must actively embrace our heritage and recover the ancient values that in previous generations have made our nation the envy of the world.
