Arise a mighty army – Raise the shield

There is a battle raging over the UK. A battle that seeks to rewrite our history, overthrow our culture, and crush our religious belief – a battle to destroy, and replace, our identity.  As part of all this, chaos and violence have come to our once-quiet streets; the news is full of horror stories of paedophilia, grooming, sexual abuse and exploitation; and every day we see growing evidence of ideological subversion, consciously designed to destabilise and undermine our national identity and values.  To make us ashamed of who we are. As Keir Starmer has rightly pointed out, we are in a fight for the soul of our nation.

It is no exaggeration to say that society, as we know it, is disintegrating before our eyes.  With serialised relationships the norm, and children separated from, or even never knowing, their biological parents, ‘family’ no longer fulfils its primary function of providing a shield – a safe place – against a frightening and sometimes hostile world.   Even worse, we teach children from birth to worship the great god, Self – I’m important, I matter, I’m entitled … let no one stand in my way.  And thereby we have bred a hope-less and lost generation, who, unable to see beyond themselves, can no longer discern the path that leads to life.  Small wonder rates for mental illness are at an all-time high!  But even that is not an end to it all, because we have welcomed, and even promoted, belief systems and religions overtly hostile to Christ, and that have spread like a cancer through the body of our land.  Now there is even a likelihood that we might soon find ourselves once again at war, the infrastructures on which we depend disabled by enemy action, followed by physical attack and invasion.

In years gone by, faced by hostile aggression, men and women took up arms and gave their lives … that we might live.  But in this present attack, beguiled by the delusion of ‘greatness’, we have signally failed to recognise the enemy coming against us and so have done nothing to defend ourselves. On the contrary, in the name of tolerance and inclusivity, we have welcomed and given a home to those who seek our destruction.  Like a maggot that eats away unseen at the core of an apple, spreading rot from within, we have allowed ideologies and belief systems, whose aim is to destroy, to take root, and spread their poison.  On top of that, we have allowed foreign powers to take control of our industries and financial institutions, and given away our power, for supposed financial benefit.  In thus listening and succumbing to evil, we have betrayed the legacy of those who went before, and become agents of our own destruction.

But in the midst of all the chaos, the heart that is Britain still beats, and Christ, the Son of God, remains our Sovereign Lord.  Down the centuries, while we have kept faith – however imperfectly – He has protected and delivered us from all attack, and His will remains to do the same now.  But He will act only when we turn back to Him, as a nation, and repent the evil we have both done and allowed.

In this battle for the soul of our nation, God is now very near.  In fact, we are at a cross-roads, and He is calling His forces here on earth to stand.  In particular, at VfJUK, we feel He is calling us, in prayer, to raise a shield of protection over the UK.  A shield that will both repel enemy attack and defend the Lord’s people, currently caught by the darkness, that they may be enabled to see the light – Christ’s light – and turn again and be saved.  That, in these dark and challenging times, they may once again resist evil, and stand for righteousness and truth.

As our out-going Prime Minister has said, we are truly in a battle for the soul of the nation.  But before we can have any hope of victory, the defences must be strengthened.

We’re asking people to commit to praying for 15 minutes every Friday at a regular time of their choosing.  With enough people signing up, we then hope to cover the complete 24 hours.
Every week we’ll send out, in advance, a prayer bulletin with three suggested areas for prayer that week.

Please be aware, this is spiritual warfare, and in battle, without proper preparation, there are always casualties.  We are anxious that all who take part, and their families, will be kept safe, so everyone who signs up will be assigned a named Prayer Buddy, for whom they will be asked to pray daily blessing and protection.  Like a Roman shield wall, we are aiming, as we advance, to protect each other from enemy attack.

This is very important.  How much contact you have with your prayer buddy – and you might like to pray together via WhatsApp or Zoom, or, equally, have no one-to-one contact at all – will be completely up to you, but as a minimum, we are going to ask you to pray for each other every day – to shield ourselves as we join together in prayer on Fridays.
