Deliver Us from Evil

Alastair Campbell, former spin doctor to Tony Blair, famously said, We don’t do God. Perhaps exceptionally for those working so hard to manipulate the public image, he was for once speaking the absolute truth … and look where it’s got us.

A lot of politicians talk today about ‘broken Britain’, referring to the nation’s economic decay, to family breakdown, and to the generalised disintegration of society – problems everywhere! But it would perhaps be closer to the mark to say that our nation has become not simply broken, but rotten at the core. Which is the inevitable state of a nation that rejects God. Where once we proudly stood for justice, faithfulness, strength and truth, now we have become a by-word for sexual licence, perversion, ideological indoctrination, cultural overthrow … and for the mass slaughter of our unborn. And all of this has come about because we have transferred our worship from God to worship of the unholy, thereby allowing the demonic to gain a stranglehold over our land.

What politicians have signally failed to understand is that there is no neutral middle ground where it is possible to balance competing interests – you either serve God … or the other guy. The sad – and to many, unpalatable – truth is that, in rejecting God, we have proclaimed our allegiance to the devil, and he has been very quick to take up residence. Corruption and sin are the entirely predictable outcomes of our hubris. And it is corruption and sin that we are seeing in the latest revelations about Peter Mandelson and his associates. But there have been many such scandals surrounding the lives of our political elite in recent years, so the question is … what more is there bubbling away under the cover of darkness that still remains to be revealed?

Of course, none of us is perfect – or, to put it another way, sinless – but those who have faith do at least try. We know we are accountable to God. But those politicians and public figures who flagrantly reject God, as if that were somehow commendable, suffer no such inhibition. My truth has supplanted God’s truth, and if I enjoy behaviours that the less enlightened label sexually deviant, then that’s their problem. I’ll do what I want! Thus perversion, sexual abuse, and deviance, become accepted and normalised.

From what we have been told, Peter Mandelson’s lifestyle has been deplorable. It carries the stench of evil. But let us make no mistake. He is not alone in the spirit of arrogance and entitlement that is direct result of our rejection of God, and that has enabled such deviant behaviour to take root.

Our country is decaying, weak, and rotten at the core, and only radical surgery can fix it. Which has to start with a return to God. The true God. On our present trajectory, the prognosis is dire; there will be no chance of recovery. Yet there is hope. If we will only turn back to Christ and repent, as a nation once again acknowledging Him as Sovereign and Lord, then God will help and deliver us. But that cannot happen without the rot first being cut out, because goodness and evil cannot co-exist, and God will brook no rival. Because of our rejection and rebellion – our futile attempts to re-create creation – God has for the moment withdrawn His protection and is allowing us to reap the fruits of our sin. But if we turn back to Him – even now, at this late hour – He will deliver us from those who seek our destruction.

In WW2, seven times Britain faced almost certain annihilation, and seven times the King called the nation to pray. As a result, seven times we saw a mighty deliverance. Against all the odds, we won what had seemed at first an unwinnable war.

It can happen again … if we will only repent.

For our survival, the Augean stables must now be swept clean and purged. Out political elite must be called to account and, as a nation, we must turn from sin and seek after righteousness. We must become once again a people of God … Then God Himself will move in power to help and deliver us.
