Descent into chaos: Keir’s version of fiddling while Rome burns?

Conference season is upon us, and this week the Labour party is meeting in Liverpool.  In an effort to resolve the migrant problem and counter the challenge from Reform, Sir Keir Starmer has taken the opportunity to announce the introduction of ID cards for all, at the same time unreservedly branding Reform policy as racist and immoral and stating that the two parties are at war.  As a sop to pro-Palestinian activists claiming Israeli genocide, he has also of course recognised Palestine as a state, and appears to have declared war on what he labels far-right extremists i.e. the vast majority of the population holding traditional British values and who have been be born in, or have genuine historic links to, the UK.

Such intemperate language, far from promoting national unity, can only increase general disillusionment and unrest.  However dressed up, the Prime Minister’s position is fundamentally and at heart a rejection of the UK’s genuine traditional values – values founded on the Bible, and of genuine respect for all as made in the image of God.  The truth is, the country has lost its moral compass and is badly adrift. On our present trajectory, in fact, the country is in terminal decline, and for all Sir Keir’s pontificating about reclaiming ‘patriotism’, he is betraying those for whom this country, racially and/or religiously, is truly ‘home’.

The UK is a Christian country.  Our society, laws, and culture are all alike rooted in the Bible and Christian belief, and the recent move to display the Union and St George flags across the nation is affirmation of that.  They are a sign not of ‘hatred’, but of genuine patriotism, and the distortion by hostile entities branding the flags racist is a dangerous and divisive perversion, that can only intensify the unrest already being felt by so many.

ID cards – at base a totalitarian weapon allowing the government to monitor and restrict the free movement of all – won’t save us from the evils of illegal migration.  Just as the ‘one in, one out’ scheme with France won’t curb the numbers of people crossing in boats, but will actually serve only to increase the inflow of migrants.  Starmer is right.  The country is caught in an ideological war – but pandering to those hostile to our values and culture, while declaring war on what he brands right-wing traditionalists, can only exacerbate the problem.

The only thing that can save us, ensuring that we remain a united country that genuinely respects all, fearlessly upholding freedom of belief and speech, is that we return as a nation to our Christian roots, and once again uphold Christian values and belief.  To do that, we must be prepared to restrict the imposition of values and belief systems that run counter to our national identity, values and culture.  Pre-eminently perhaps, this applies to our acceptance of other religions.  As a Christian country, we must respect the God-given right of all to freedom of choice – which means that all alike are ‘free’ to choose the religion they follow.   But as a Christian country, we must not accord equal standing to those other religions; and followers of other religions coming to our country must accept the pre-eminence and teachings of Christianity.

For this to happen, the Church must recover its voice, and once again become the light by which politicians steer our unwieldy ship of state, while men and women – the great British public – must follow, without compromise and fearlessly, the teachings of Christ.

Only Christ can save us.
