How to have sex: advice for children

Bridgend council in Wales has been heavily criticised for last year commissioning a PowerPoint presentation for use in schools endorsing, among other things, strangulation during sex.  Seemingly tackling the problem of consent, one of the slides stated baldly, ‘It is never OK to start choking someone without asking them first.’.

Thankfully, the draft guidance was dropped after being vetoed by health professionals, who pointed out that non-fatal strangulation or suffocation, whether with consent or otherwise, was a criminal act, punishable with a maximum of 5 years imprisonment.  Any kind of criminal activity, they said, should not be promoted to children.  The Welsh government apparently took a similar, though less rigorous approach, stating that non-fatal strangulation was ‘dangerous and illegal, and that any resources the Bridgend council gave schools should ‘make this clear’.  Hu…um.

Clearly, it is good that the presentation has been dropped, but that it could be commissioned in the first place raises extreme concern.  When sex and relationships education was first formally introduced into schools in the 1940s, it was with the intention of keeping children safe from venereal disease, most particularly syphilis and gonorrhea – rates of which skyrocketed during the war – and of protecting girls from the dangers of unwanted pregnancy.  It was felt that both, if left unchecked, would be a danger not just to children, but to the whole of society.

Classes appear to have majored heavily on the reproductive life of rabbits and the like, and left much to be desired. This was followed, however, by the ‘sexual revolution’ of the 1960s, which famously advocated free love for all, and suddenly the whole approach changed.  Sex, whenever, wherever, and with whomsoever you chose, became ‘good’.  Who needed commitment or fidelity?  All that mattered was immediate gratification, free of any unwelcome consequences.  Lust reigned supreme, and overnight sex seemed to become an almost inviolable human right!  Today, that mindset has become embedded to such a point that it seems almost beyond question.  So much so that promiscuity has become the norm, advocated from adolescence onwards – as soon, in fact, as a child feels ‘ready’, which may be as young as 10.   All the while supported by the mantra, ‘We mustn’t judge!’

Perhaps inevitably, to accommodate this shift in attitude, over the years the emphasis in sex education has changed.  Indeed, morality has changed, so that values of chastity and faithfulness are no longer taught as ‘good’, but have been displaced by the need for universal tolerance, acceptance, and the celebration of inclusivity – to the extent that children are now actively encouraged to explore different sexualities, in order to discover who and what they really are!  As well as teaching the mechanics of sex – vaginal, oral, and anal, as well as self-stimulation and fetishism – extensive advice is also given on dealing with sexual infection, to which almost all teenagers seem at some point to fall prey, along with the necessity for contraception, and guidance on how to access abortion in the event of failure.

Not good!  But even given our current social climate, how could anyone seriously imagine that teaching children how to strangle one another in order to increase sexual arousal – for one participant at least – could possibly be acceptable?  What possible motivation could there be?  And what damage is the implied approval of such activity doing to the nation’s young?

Whatever may be claimed, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the aim of such policies – promoting as they do sexual deviance – is not child protection and safeguarding at all, but rather the promotion of an ideological agenda aimed at undermining and destroying our society.

Let us be clear, detailed and explicit teaching on the mechanics of sexual practice, without any kind of moral frame or guidance, can only encourage sexual experimentation and deviance.  It not only puts children at risk, but fatally undermines their capacity in life to form longstanding, committed relationships, thereby isolating them emotionally and increasing the fatal erosion of ‘family’ – the effects of which are already all too evident within society as a whole.   Perhaps more importantly, it opens young people to disease, irrevocably damages their self-image, and increases social isolation.  Small wonder one in five children, and one in four adults, are now recorded as suffering mental health problems each year.

The prevalence of such problems is not only wrong, but entirely avoidable.  We have it in our hands to stop this scourge and claim back society. In the interests of child protection and safety, the people who devise and promote such programmes should be removed from office and barred from all future engagement with the nation’s young.

Third reading of the Assisted Dying Bill.
This week!

Contact your MP today

Assisted Dying, if passed, will inevitably open the door to State-sanctioned culling of the elderly and vulnerable.

That some, with terminal disease, may decide prematurely to end their suffering remains their choice.  But the burden of implementing that choice cannot, and must not, be imposed upon others.  And most especially it must not be imposed onto doctors, whose primary duty is not to kill, but to care for the sick.

There is every danger that, if society supports assisted suicide, the message will become embedded that life in general has value only while it remains ‘productive’, and, as said, it will become a licence to cull the vulnerable and weak.  As is all too evident in other jurisdictions where assisted dying is legal, no proposed ‘safeguards’ can guard against this.
