National Cross Day, this Saturday!
It’s believed that Christianity first arrived on our shores around 40 AD. Not as result of any great evangelistic mission, but brought here by Roman traders, who’d come across and embraced the new faith for themselves back home. It was a tiny, insignificant seed, that, against all the odds, over the next two or three hundred years took root and spread. By the 4th century, Christianity was well established, and by the 7th century, Britain was, to all intents and purposes, a Christian country. The first clause of Magna Carta, signed at Runnymede on 15th June 1215, formalised this, establishing the principle that the king and his government ruled under God, and guaranteeing the freedom of the Church from state interference.
Down the centuries, as we have kept faith – however imperfectly – God, our Sovereign Lord, has protected and delivered us from all attack, invasion, civil strife, pestilence and plague. That doesn’t mean, of course, that all threats have magically evaporated and we haven’t had to put in effort ourselves. On the contrary, we have had to fight for our freedoms, as so well illustrated in WW2. Then, standing alone against the might of Nazi Germany and facing what looked to be certain annihilation, it was only prayer, called for by the King, that delivered us – first, by creating the right conditions for us to survive, and then, later, enabling us to fight back!
So many gave their lives back then that we might live. We honour them by defending our faith and heritage – yet today Christian belief is under attack as never before, while our heritage and national identity is being vilified by those who wish us ill.
New ideologies and faiths hostile to God have taken root and, to our shame, we are collapsing before the onslaught. All gods are the same, the new pundits say; sex is a human right for everyone – including children – whenever, wherever and with whomsoever they want; every woman has the right to choose whether or not the baby in her womb be allowed to live; marriage is just a convenient, and possibly temporary, contract between a couple, of whatever gender configuration, who want for the time being to make a public commitment; and gender is just a social construct – so choose for yourself what you want to be!
The insanity goes on and on, and society stands back, congratulating itself on the triumph of diversity, tolerance, and inclusivity over all. In the name of human rights defending everyone … except for the unwanted unborn, the misfits who refuse to accept the new Weltanschauung, and those who hold inconvenient Christian faith.
This is not right.
At VfJUK we are proud to proclaim that Christ died to set us free from sin. We are proud of the nation’s Christian faith and heritage, and we will defend it against any and all who deny the divinity of Christ as the incarnate Son of God, and who seek to suppress or rewrite the Bible.
That’s why, this Saturday, 26th September, we’re going to be wearing our crosses with pride, and telling people about Jesus.
Will you join us? Will you wear your cross this Saturday? Will you say to the curious: this Cross is a symbol of Christ, the one and only Son of God, who became man, and for our sake was crucified, to release us from sin. On that cross He defeated Satan. And He will return to claim His kingdom!
