Good news
We are told that Rushmoor Borough Council, in response to what is called ‘adverse publicity’, has paused its call for an injunction against street preaching in Farnborough and Aldershot, while it engages with Christian leaders locally to discuss the way forward. It has apparently abandoned its draconian call for a ban on all street preaching in favour of more targeted measures to deal with identified individuals who, they say, have been acting aggressively towards members of the public. Specifically, Rushmoor has agreed not to call for any limitations on preaching, praying, singing, reading from the Bible or handing out Bible texts in Farnborough and Aldershot town centres, as originally requested, but simply for restrictions on shouting and screaming.
This is welcome news, and testament to what can be achieved by reasoned engagement. We shall, needless to say, continue to keep a close eye on developments.
Is discrimination against Christians growing?
Unquestionably, yes. It seems that almost every day we hear of street preachers being arrested, of people being sacked for quoting from the Bible … or disciplined and sent for diversity training for offering to pray with someone! Over the course of the last 18 months, VfJUK’s Commission of Inquiry Into Discrimination Against Christians (CIDAC) has heard evidence from a wide variety of people who have, quite literally, been penalised for refusing to compromise their faith.
In these increasingly dark and challenging times, let us take encouragement from their brave example and likewise defend our faith. Let us never forget that Britain, despite the attack on our identity and values, is still a ‘Christian’ country. Let us therefore fearlessly stand on those values, and reclaim the ground being illegitimately seized by hostile entities attempting to take control.
Assisted Suicide
In the news today, MPs have voted to scrap the need for a High Court judge to approve assisted dying applications, after it was pointed out that any such requirement would swamp an already over-worked judiciary. Previously, it had been claimed by Kim Leadbeater MP, the Bill’s sponsor, that requiring approval by a High Court judge would make the proposed legislation ‘the strictest in the world’. It would seem, however, that this requirement is now seen as irrelevant and Ms Leadbeater is proposing instead a three-person review panel, made up of a senior legal figure (whatever that means), a psychiatrist and a social worker.
It need hardly be said that this breaks her earlier promises, removing in one fell swoop claimed protections that can result only in exposing the vulnerable to risk of coercion, whether explicit or implied. Sadly, however, such a cavalier approach seems par for the course. It has, for example, been pointed out that of the 23 MPs appointed to the Scrutiny Committee, tasked with going through the Bill line by line to identify and remove potential weaknesses, a mere 8 oppose assisted dying, with the majority appearing to take the view that their primary duty is simply to support whatever Ms Leadbeater says! From which it follows that no amendments restricting the scope and operation of the Bill yet appear to have been accepted.
Too many people admitted to hospital are already dying prematurely as a result of inappropriate end-of-life decisions taken by those entrusted with their care. Indeed, we have reached a place where many of the elderly and/or vulnerable are frightened to go into hospital, for fear they’ll never come out alive! The question must therefore be asked – should this pernicious Bill be passed, what protections will there be for those who want to live out their days naturally? Or will ‘assisted dying’ simply become shorthand for ‘licensed euthanasia’?
If you haven’t yet done so, please write to your MP today, expressing your concern (for help in what to say, go to our website: https://vfjuk.org/resources/endoflifeandassistedsuicide/
Better still, ask to see your MP face-to-face, so that you can explain your worries more fully.
