The UK – a society built on death
This year marks the 58th anniversary of the Abortion Act. Back in 1967, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Bill was marketed as a restrictive emergency measure – an act of compassion to help women who would otherwise be driven to seek backstreet abortion. David Steel, who introduced the Bill, said, “We want to stamp out the backstreet abortions, but it is not the intention of the promoters of the Bill to leave a wide-open door for abortion on request.”
His breezy assurance has, from the beginning, proved misplaced. Within the first year of the Act’s passing, there were 27,200 abortions. Two years later, that figure had risen to 58,632, with the numbers rising steadily ever since. The figures for 2024 have yet to be released, but it’s estimated there were more than 300,000 abortions, a massive surge on previous years, helped by the easy availability of pills by post – no need to see a doctor, ladies, have an abortion in the comfort of your own home!
Since 1967, in England and Wales, there have been almost 11,000,000 abortions. To put this in some kind of perspective, the current population of the UK stands at around 69,000,000, which means we have aborted the equivalent of some 16% of our entire population – more than the population of London. Or of countries such as the Czech Republic, Portugal, Austria ….
Last year, one third of conceptions in England ended in abortion. Abortion activists may say what’s wrong with that? A woman has an absolute right to choose what happens to her own body, so if she doesn’t want to host a parasite for 9 months, she shouldn’t have to! But the result is that we’re killing off our population. This is actually genocide – the intentional killing of a specific group, in this case, the unborn. But it’s become so commonplace that nobody seems to care.
Small wonder our society is in such a mess!
Sex is ordained by God as an act of love between a man and a woman for the procreation of children. It’s God’s gift, designed to bind a man and woman together in relationship, so that they can support and care for each other, while bringing up any children they might have. Sex is the underpinning of family, which in turn is the building block of society.
But today we’ve separated sex from relationship and made it an end in itself, and, inevitably, it’s the family that’s suffering. Instead of being something precious, that binds a man and woman together, sex has become a leisure activity. It’s casual – what happens at the end of a night out! We might have a relationship with our partner for the evening, but equally we might not – we might not want one … and if there does just happen to be an unwelcome consequence … well, we’ll get rid of it! Abortion has become another form of contraception.
The boundaries that underpinned society have gone and, unsurprisingly, we’re seeing more and more families breaking down under the pressure, with young and old alike increasingly incapable of forming long-lasting, committed, stable relationships. But it’s not just the family unit that’s suffering – without the prospect of meaningful relationship, increasing numbers of individuals of all ages are being left lonely and isolated, while at the same time, we’re seeing a huge increase in things such as rape, sexual assault, grooming, paedophilia …
It is a truth that some will find difficult to accept, but all these things start with promiscuity and our easy acceptance of abortion. To put it another way, our prioritisation of self-gratification over responsibility towards others lies at the heart of all the problems afflicting society today.
Samuel, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Paul (not to mention Jesus) … the Bible tells us that every child is special and known to God, from before conception, and that every child has a unique destiny. The Bible also places an absolute prohibition on taking innocent life, which it labels sin – and especially it prohibits child sacrifice, which is actually what abortion is. Blood sacrifice on the altar of Self. So many in society today dismiss God. He’s not real, they say, a fairy story for kids and the weak-minded! But God is real, and He cares. He cares very much. By our blood sacrifice of the unborn in our worship of Self, we have put our nation under judgment. Abortion doesn’t just take the life of a baby and affect the mother – whose every instinct is to protect and love her unborn child. It affects all of us.
Grooming gangs, growing violence on our streets, what looks to be the increasing chaos and disintegration of government … financial collapse – all of this can be traced back to our unthinking slaughter of the unborn. Which stems, at base, from our separation of sex from commitment and family – from our demand to gratify lust and have whatever we want, whenever we want, with whomsoever we want. It is our own wrong choices that have precipitated the disintegration and collapse of society. To have any chance, therefore, of turning the tide and recovering a solid foundation – that benefits all – we must start once again to value and care for our young, seeing them for what they are. The gift of God.
Every child is special. Every child deserves a chance.
Every child, from the moment of conception, deserves love.

Urgent action needed!
This year, by means of an amendment added to the Crime and Policing Bill, we have seen a radical call to decriminalise abortion up to birth, allowing a woman to terminate the life of her unborn child at any stage, without fear of prosecution. It was carried in the Commons by a massive 379 votes to 137 and is now undergoing scrutiny in the House of Lords.
As a government Bill, the measure as a whole cannot be rejected by the House of Lords, but the Peers can reject the amendment. Baroness Monckton, supported by Baroness Stroud, has tabled another amendment to remove what’s known as Clause 191, on the grounds that it represents ‘extreme social change’ that has not been given adequate parliamentary or public scrutiny. Please write to members of the House of Lords today, urging them to support Baroness Monckton’s amendment and to reject Clause 191.
