Please sign our petition: NO to Hamid Patel as Chair of Ofsted
Before taking on the role of chief executive of Star Academies, a Muslim faith-based network of 36 schools, Sir Hamid Patel was headteacher of Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School in Blackburn, where he encouraged pupils to recite the Koran at least once a week, to shun ‘un-Islamic’ images (e.g. pictures of popstars), and to wear the hijab both outside and inside school. Perhaps, like one of our supporters who decided to research the name, you have wondered what ‘Tauheedul’ means. We didn’t know either, but we are now better informed, because he shared with us the fruits of his research.
Tauheedul, alternatively spelt tawhid or tauheed, apparently means that there is one, single god, besides whom there is no other deity. It underlies the formula, “There is no god but God and Muhammad is His prophet.” It expressly and overtly denies the divinity of Christ, as Son of God, and it denies the Trinity, stating that all worship should be directed solely to Allah. In sum, the name of the school calls for the exclusive worship of Allah, rejecting the divinity of Christ, and calling for obedience to Mohammed.
Currently, Muslims round the world are observing Ramadan, their holy month commemorating the time of year in which it is believed the Quran was revealed to Mohammed, and which is scheduled to end on 30th March. It overlaps this year, of course, with Lent, the Christian penitential season leading up to Easter, the most important festival in the Christian calendar, when believers across the world reflect on the sacrifice of Christ, to save us from sin, and prepare to celebrate His resurrection at Easter.
As the UK is nominally Christian, with 46% of the population identifying as believers – and not forgetting of course that the King is officially head of the Anglican Church – you might expect that this important season would receive some form at least of public recognition, and its religious nature would be honoured. But no, apart from the appearance of Hot Cross buns and Easter eggs in the shops – a tribute to consumerism rather than Christ – there has this year been almost complete silence. Coupled, in the interests of ‘inclusivity’, with the cancellation by some schools of Easter themed events.
Ramadan, however, has enjoyed a huge upsurge of interest. There has, for example, been a veritable plethora of articles in the press explaining what it’s all about, why it’s important, and how we can help our Muslim friends, maybe by cooking them iftar (that’s a special dinner, to you and me, marking the end of the day’s fast). At the same time, schools across the country have produced detailed guidance on how to meet the needs of Muslim pupils and staff during this religiously significant period, and London has been ablaze with what have universally been described as stunning displays of Ramadan lights. Coinciding with all of which, of course, are also the advertisements now appearing across the capital, enjoining everyone to ‘Trust Allah’.
On any assessment, this would seem to be, in fact, an orchestrated campaign to marginalise Christianity and promote Islam. Which seems especially unwise when it is remembered that Islam means submission, and that it is the expressed goal of Muslims, in the name of Allah, to dominate the world.
Given this, it is both inappropriate and misguided for a devout Muslim, such as Sir Hamid Patel, to be appointed Chair of the regulatory body having oversight of the entire education system of England. For the protection of our children, our culture, our laws and national identity, help us defend the nation’s faith.
