Following the publication of a report by the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians (OIDAC), which found that the UK is now ranked as one of the top five countries for anti-Christian hate crime in Europe, VfJUK commissioned a survey to discover whether or not this was true.
From the 1,562 responses received, we discovered that Christians holding traditional beliefs based on the Bible are increasingly being subjected to marginalisation, harassment, disadvantage and outright discrimination – at work, socially, in education and, perhaps most disturbingly of all, in some Christian churches!
Some of our findings:
38% of under 35s felt their freedom of speech was restricted.
56% – 61% experienced hostility and ridicule if they discussed their religious beliefs.
Over half of under 35s felt there were negative stereotypes of Christians at their place of work.
78% believed religious discrimination was not treated as seriously as other forms of discrimination.
So what are the ‘revolutionary’ beliefs seemingly attracting so much opprobrium?
Our survey found that:
92% of our respondents believed that marriage was between a man and a woman, as against 78% of the mainstream population, who supported same sex marriage.
86% believed we should avoid sexual relations outside marriage.
93% believed we are all born male or female.
In our current woke culture, it would seem public expression of such views is no longer acceptable.
The results are a wake-up call, not just to Christians, but to all concerned with freedom of speech and freedom of belief.
“Christianity is the cornerstone for so many of the values we take for granted. If it were not for Christianity, our tolerance, our diversity, freedom of conscience and love for our neighbour would become a thing of the past … We all need to wake up to the attack on Christianity in our society, before it turns into something even more sinister. This report is a vital step in sounding the alarm.”
Nick Fletcher, formerly MP for Don Valley, currently standing for re-election
