We call on Sir Keir Starmer to apologise for the insult and hurt he has caused Christians.

On Good Friday, Sir Keir Starmer visited the Jesus House for all the Nations Church in Brent, warmly commending it for its contribution to the local community by serving as a vaccination centre. However, the Labour campaign group for LGBT+ Rights, having discovered that the senior pastor of the church, Agu Irukwu, opposed same sex marriage and the philosophy underlying current equality law, branded the visit ‘unacceptable’ and demanded their leader apologise (www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/starmer-church-jesus-house-gay-b1827089.html). Sir Keir immediately complied, apologising for the hurt caused to the LGBT community and saying the visit had been “a mistake”.

The Jesus House for All the Nations church maintains traditional Christian belief as set down in the Bible. They had done nothing wrong. In branding his visit a mistake, Sir Keir, by implication, has called Christian belief a mistake. Moreover, he has demonstrated discrimination, intolerance and bigotry towards those who uphold traditional beliefs.

This is both insulting and offensive to Christians, as well as causing deep hurt. We demand Sir Keir make an immediate retraction, and apologise to Christians for the deep hurt caused by so thoughtless and offensive a condemnation of Christian belief.
