When a nation loses its moral compass

Two former cast members of the Channel 4 programme Married at First Sight UK have accused their on-screen partners of rape, while a third has alleged a non-consensual sexual act.  For those unfamiliar with this show, single people are matched with total strangers, whom they first meet on air, undergo a mock wedding ceremony, and then go on honeymoon – accompanied of course by an attendant film crew.  On their return, the couple then lives together for a period of time, after which they choose, at a ‘Commitment ceremony’, whether or not to continue the relationship.  But from the start of their relationship, the pair live as a married couple, which means that from Day 1 they share the same bed, and the film crew apparently regularly run bets as to whether or not, and when, the couple will have sex.

The underlying rationale is allegedly to test whether or not love is a scientific anomaly, and the show makes much of its psychological profiling.  But this is surely disingenuous.  If you put two strangers in bed together within hours of meeting, all the while filming them, it is clearly with the expectation that there will be something worth filming – which won’t be met by Johnny lying on his back, snoring, while Jade paints her toe nails.  No, the show’s creators will from the first want action, and a major factor, designed to attract the maximum number of viewers, will inevitably be the sexual behaviour and response of the participants.  It is hardly to be wondered at, therefore, that at some point there should be sexually inappropriate behaviour, and one might with justification say that the underlying premise for the programme is disgusting – a voyeuristic exercise that feeds on prurience.

By separating sex from faithfulness and commitment, and making it an object of unhealthy entertainment, society today encourages promiscuity and depravity.  The women accusing their on-screen partners of rape are understandably angry – but they will surely have understood, along with the TV bosses and film crew, that there was an expectation they would at some point have sex.  That they expected it would be with their consent does not detract from the underlying reality that this is a form of prostitution being screened for public entertainment and financial benefit, and, as such, it should have no place in a self-proclaimed civilised society.

Not content with the current climate of sexual degeneracy, however, in April this year Labour MP Samantha Niblett launched a campaign to make 2026 the ‘summer of sex’, calling for more open and inclusive sex education, with a planned accompanying display of titillating sex toys in Parliament.  She is apparently collaborating in this bold initiative with someone called Cindy Gallop, described as a sextech entrepreneur, who offers what’s labelled as an online alternative to hardcore pornography.  According to Niblett, who would appear to enjoy the site, “It’s a turn on, it helps you masturbate…”

Are these people for real!?!

Over the last century, we have seen an increasingly fierce ideological battle raging over our nation.  Secularists would have us believe that this is an inevitable part of civilisation’s progress.  Mankind, they say, has come of age, and we just don’t need some kind of judgmental fairy in the sky any more – we can do what we want!   We’re in control!  But the reality is, we can’t, and we’re not.  Let us make no mistake, what we are seeing now is, at heart, simply the latest manifestation of the age-old battle between good and evil – between God and the devil – that started way back in Eden.  Society’s current chaos is the outworking of our wrong choices, which inevitably have brought us under judgment.  To have any chance of survival, therefore, it is urgent that we repent and turn back to God, who alone can deliver and save us from the evils that have taken root in our land.

Sexual licence, promiscuity, abortion – combined with soaring rates of immigration, and our increasingly so-called multi-cultural, multi-faith and ‘inclusive’ society … all are working to destroy our national identity, culture, and heritage.   But, grim though the prospects are, it doesn’t have to be this way.  Let us not forget that time and again, over the centuries, God has delivered us in times of peril.  In World War 2, for example, when Britain stood alone against the might of Nazi Germany, God miraculously saved our forces from what looked to be certain annihilation on the beaches of Dunkirk, by sending a great calm that allowed hundreds of small boats – manned by ordinary men and women who didn’t know where they were going when they set out – to cross the Channel and pick up the stranded troops.  Of the 400,000 men driven onto the beaches, Churchill had been told by his advisors that we’d be lucky if 40,000 could be rescued, but the final number was 338,000, which enabled us to carry on the fight … and eventually win.

The British are a quiet, ruminative people, but some 2,000 years ago Christianity first came to our shores and, against all the odds, took root.  So much so that, by around the 7th century AD, we had become to all intents and purposes a Christian nation, with our laws, society, and culture all alike founded on the Bible and Christian belief.  In the years that followed, while we’ve kept faith, God has defended us – and it is incontrovertible that the foundations laid by our ancestors, though they may in recent years have taken a battering, remain.

Our God is Sovereign, and still stands ready to help.  But He will not do so while we continue in rebellion, because that kind of deliverance would only allow the perpetuation of evil, and He loves us too much to allow us to remain in Satan’s thrall.  To see His deliverance, therefore, we must repent the wrong choices we have made, both personally and as a society, cleanse ourselves, and once again acknowledge Him as our Sovereign and Lord.  The nation must recover its moral compass.  Then, and only then, will we see the awesome power of our God revealed.
