In 1967, when David Steel introduced the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Bill, he said, “We want to stamp out the backstreet abortions, but it is not the intention of the promoters of the Bill to leave a wide-open door for abortion on request.” He estimated that there might be around 300 terminations a year.
In 2023, there were 277,970 abortions recorded for residents of England and Wales, the highest number since the Abortion Act was introduced, and marking an 11% increase on the year before. Overall, since 1967, England and Wales has seen an estimated 11,105,671 abortions – though this is probably an under-estimate, given the time lag in collating data. Globally, there are around 73 million abortions a year, while according to the Guttmacher Institute, since Roe v. Wade legalised abortion in the US in 1973, it is estimated that, world-wide, there have been some 3 trillion abortions.
98% of all abortions are carried out for what are euphemistically termed ‘social reasons’, meaning that for whatever reason, the baby at the time is simply unwanted.
To be blunt, what we are seeing is the legalised genocide of the unborn. Which means that we are throwing the gift of life back in the face of the Creator. It is not far-fetched to say that, by our unthinking slaughter of the innocent, we are placing the world under judgment.
Once called into being, that new life deserves love, protection and help. Only in this way can humanity once again flourish. Only in this way can we survive.
