As I write this,
VfJUK has barely enough funds to continue for another two months.
We believe that in these challenging and ‘Godless’ times – when our society is increasingly being subjected to ideological indoctrination, and ever-growing hostility towards Christian belief – our work is vital.
Only today, for example, we learnt that Rushmoor Borough Council is seeking an injunction to ban street preaching in Farnborough and Aldershot. The application is scheduled to be heard tomorrow and specifically seeks to prohibit Christian preaching seen as hostile to anyone with the protected characteristic(s) of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy, race, religion or belief, sex, and/or sexual orientation. It also seeks to prohibit prayer, the handing out of leaflets, posters or written material, and approaching anyone visiting, working or living within the town centres of Aldershot or Farnborough with the intention of discussing ‘religion or belief’.
In other words, this is a blanket ban on any and all public expression or manifestation of Christian belief. Can they do this? No, according to UK law, they can’t! But unless someone stops them … they will.
As a reminder, Article 9 of the Human Rights Act 1998 states that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and the right to manifest that religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance, both in public and in private. Similarly, Article 10 of the same Act lays down that everyone has the right to freedom of expression, without interference by public authority (emphasis added). Rushmoor Borough Council’s attempt to obtain an injunction prohibiting the public expression and manifestation of Christian belief is, therefore, a clear challenge to Human Rights law, and a direct attack on the values on which our nation is founded.
This cannot be allowed to pass unchallenged. Christian belief arrived on our shores in the first century AD, brought here by the Romans only a few years after Christ’s death. Despite all obstacles – and there were undeniably many – what began as a tiny seed took root and grew, so that by the 4th century there was a strong Christian presence throughout the land. By the 7th century, though the country was still divided up into separate kingdoms with fluctuating borders, to all intents and purposes, we had become a ‘Christian’ country. So much so that by 1215 Magna Carta opened by guaranteeing the freedom of the Church, and stating that the King ruled under God and was subject to the law.
Whatever the spurious claims of so-called diversity and inclusivity activists, the UK remains a Christian country. Though denied by secularists and multi-culturalists alike, the truth is that our democratic values and freedoms are rooted in the Bible, and Christianity is still the established belief of our land. By their attempt to ban the public expression of Christian belief, Rushmoor Borough Council is attacking our ancient freedoms and what it means to be ‘British’.
VfJUK is committed to defending the UK’s Christian heritage and belief, but the truth is that, without your help and support, we can’t now continue. Please help us carry on the fight.
